Strong Minds, Strong Mines

AngloGold Ashanti Australia rolled out the award-winning Strong Minds, Strong Mines (SMSM) programme across its sites in the second half of 2020 as part of its new Wellbeing@AGAA Strategy.

Developed specifically for the mining industry, the programme is a partnership between not-for-profit group Rural & Remote Mental Health (RRMH) and mental health & physical fitness ambassador, Soa “The Hulk” Palelei.

SMSM is supported at Tropicana, Sunrise Dam and in the Perth regional office by Wellbeing Champions from within the workforce who have undergone training.

The champions promote and encourage mental and physical wellbeing, deliver SMSM toolbox presentations during the 13-month programme, and support diversity and inclusion initiatives. Comprehensive training and support is provided to the champions.

AGAA’s mining alliance partner at Tropicana, Macmahon Holdings, successfully piloted SMSM at Tropicana and its other operations during 2018 and 2019 and the programme went on to win the Western Australia Mental Health Award in 2019.

The Australia Region Leadership Team is committed to Wellbeing@AGAA. It is an approach that fits the company’s values and culture of caring for people. Wellbeing considers all aspects of a person’s health including their psychological, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing

The Wellbeing@AGAA strategy incorporates six pillars designed to provide employees with the knowledge, skills, tools and support to be able to thrive at work and in life.

The pillars comprise Leadership; Health & Wellbeing Training; Understanding Psychosocial Hazards; Health & Wellbeing Resources; Peer & Family Support; and Diversity and Inclusion.
